Design for Manufacturability ….Striving to be More Productive

The Problem:

Sister company HK Plastics Engineering, Inc. was assembling products for a customer who specified a component part made from threaded bar stock. The supply of threaded bar stock was expensive and unreliable.

The Solution:

Working together, the two divisions of HK resigned the part so it could be made using HK Screw Machine Products machining technologies. HK’s customer was willing to evaluate the new design and eventually gave the blessing to switch from the threaded bar stock part to a round bar stock part treaded at both ends. The front thread was cut while the rear thread was rolled eliminating the need for a 2nd operation. Also, the part could be machined without the use of costly machine oil by using air cooling technology.

The Result:

HK Plastics Engineering, Inc found a new supplier in it’s sister company HK Screw Machine Products. Component parts were produced with less cost with higher repeatability. Most important, a steady and reliable source of parts was found enabling better service for a valuable HK customer.
